Tools of the Trade: Online Outplacement Training

For the last several months I have been authoring this series on technology for professionals to use for their personal careers. We’ve covered applications and technologies to help find jobs, to help organize yourself, and to help you find information. The second part of this series is going to be on education. We’ll talk about how to learn more to stay on top of your game and to both establish and maintain your status as a subject matter expert. In a rare turn of events, this week we’re talking about a technology that we offer.

Our Executive Outplacement Training is available at your own desk. Continue reading Tools of the Trade: Online Outplacement Training

Self-Assessment

In today’s job market you must be able to convince both the recruiter and the hiring organization that you have the skills set to be successful in the position.  Therefore, it is imperative to understand the organization’s profile of the ideal candidate and how your skills and background match those traits. Most healthcare organizations today are seeking executives with skills and accomplishments in the areas of expense control, revenue growth, productivity enhancement, safety/quality improvement, physician integration and customer satisfaction.  In order to successfully match your talents to the client’s needs, you must first know your own strengths and accomplishments.  You need to complete a self-examination before you begin your job search. A Few Pointers before You Begin Your Search Process

Hopefully you feel more comfortable with the process of career transition and are beginning to accept your separation.  Psychological research conducted by William Bridges, and reported in his excellent book TRANSITIONS, clearly confirms that until we have an ending, it is very difficult to make the transition which takes us ultimately to a new beginning.  Continue reading A Few Pointers before You Begin Your Search Process

Tools of the Trade: What’s the Deal with Glassdoor?

As a technologist in an HR related company, one of the questions I get the most is, “What’s the deal with Glassdoor?” It’s not an easy question to answer.

For us, the value of Glassdoor is really a mixed bag. As a job search engine, it’s rather unimpressive. You’ll likely find that it has all the same jobs posted as all the other major job search engines but with a slightly awkward user experience.  Continue reading Tools of the Trade: What’s the Deal with Glassdoor?

Is U.S. Healthcare Really Behind Other Nations?

Imagine you’ve been kidnapped and taken for a harrowing ride that ends when you’re dumped in a remote area miles from anywhere.  You’re frightened and panic as you realize you don’t know which way to go.  You’re confused and your self-confidence begins to wane.

Losing a job can be just as frightening and lonely since your career stability, financial security and professional self-image are suddenly stripped away.  A job provides most people with their core network of relationships.  It is the ongoing social context in which most of us live our lives.  When you lose your job, relationships disappear with many of your closest contacts avoiding you when the bad news is broken to them.  Life feels flatter, thinner.  You feel alone.   Continue reading Is U.S. Healthcare Really Behind Other Nations?

Tools of the Trade: Learning by Listening to Podcasts

If you’ve been reading this series you’ve probably noticed by now that I read A LOT. and I talk about reading a lot. It’s for a good reason. I believe that we are never done learning and we are never done growing. When we decide to quit learning we are essentially giving up on ourselves and the who depend on us.

A week ago my wife gave birth to our third son. We now have three boys under four years old and despite carrying at least three books with me at all times in case I have a moment, I haven’t read a single paragraph at all in the past week. I take that back, I’ve read the same paragraph about a dozen times. My days of reading are over for a while.  Continue reading Tools of the Trade: Learning by Listening to Podcasts

Summer Means Career Planning!

71280dfd-085f-4c62-be8a-d16d221e84faSummer is here!  The American Southwest is already under scorching temperatures and elsewhere families are headed to the beach.

Summer is a time to catch up on your reading, get away from work…and also a time of reflection.  It is the second-busiest time of the year for career counselors.  Why?  All of those school-aged kids/graduates who are planning next steps in their lives.

Many young adults have no idea where to research career options and so this is a good opportunity to discuss some good resources that are available to you. Continue reading Summer Means Career Planning!

Tools of the Trade: LinkedIn Apps… all of them. Which ones you need?

We often talk to our clients about which mobile apps they might need to make their professional lives easier. In fact, I wrote a post about it back in December. But in the tech world, things change really fast. When I wrote that post, there were really only four LinkedIn apps and I recommended three of them (even though I’m a hypocrite who only used one of them). Now there are ten!

All of this can be really confusing or at least overwhelming so take a few minutes and read the rest of this to understand what they all are and how you ought to be using them (or ignoring them). Then head over to the LinkedIn Apps web page to get the ones you need. Continue reading Tools of the Trade: LinkedIn Apps… all of them. Which ones you need?

Yesterday, LinkedIn rolled out an update that really does change the way we look for jobs by leveraging our existing networks and specific information that we have on our profiles.

Tools of the Trade: Taking Notes

Google Keep Vs. Evernote

The more I’ve grown in my career the more hats i’ve had to wear, the more balls I’ve had to jungle, and the more people I’ve had to work with. All of this means one thing, more stuff being thrown at me. I don’t mind having tasks and ideas tossed at me, the hard part is catching it all.

I’ve realized through our training programs that outplacement clients have A LOT of stuff thrown at them as well. A slew of tasks and ideas come rushing their way and while none of the tasks are particularly difficult, the quantity is enough to overwhelm even the most organized people. Tools of the Trade: Be an Expert. Learn More. Be Knowledgeable.

“The more extensive a man’s knowledge of what has been done, the greater will be his power of knowing what to do.” Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881, British Prime Minister)

One of the hardest part of staying on top of what’s new, is all the work that needs to go into it. You need to be reading. A lot. “What has been done”, as Benjamin Disraeli stated, is not just what we read in history books. “What has been done”, yesterday? “What has been done”, last week? Blogs and online news outlets are your friend. The internet has hurried the time it takes for information to get from when it happens to your hands to ridiculous speeds. It’s also made the quantity of resources become overwhelming. The hardest parts are consuming it all, and not letting it overwhelm you. Continue reading Tools of the Trade: Be an Expert. Learn More. For most people most of the time, references are no problem. Unfortunately, most candidates treat their references with benign neglect. But what are the criteria for picking references? ExecutiveApps

Mobile Apps for the Executive in Transition

Embracing technology is important for the evolving executive. Mobile apps are intended to make our lives easier, and they can, but often we get bogged down in them.  There are troves of apps offering everything from scanning business cards to job search applications. Speaking of Job Search Apps, there are a ton out there but we find that those are not very good at finding jobs at the executive level so their apps are more distractions and time-wasters than they are helpful.

Here, we are going to offer our suggestions for Apps that can help:

WhatIsOutplacement

What is Outplacement and Why Does it Matter?

Simply put, outplacement is a service to guide a terminated employee of a company to a satisfactory new position or career through the provision of short- or long-term counseling and support services, on a group or individual basis, most often paid for by the terminating employer. (Source: Staffing Industry Analysts)

For employers, in many instances,“outplacement” is the right thing to do. A recent report found that many employees think that companies should provide outplacement services to their employees.* While 47% of employees agreed that companies should provide outplacement services, 73% reported that they received none when they were laid off.
